Tools You Need For Your Skincare Routine

Tools You Need For Your Skincare Routine

July 27, 202214 min read

“Not only are bloggers suckers for the remarkable, so are the How How many moms out there do you know struggle with their skin? Maybe due to poor nutrition, postpartum stress, monthly cycles, hormonal imbalances. The list goes on.

But one thing I know is if you are like me… you want to feel confident in the skin you are in. We only have one skin… so taking care of it in the best way possible is key!

I previously talked about the benefits and importance of keeping your skin healthy from the inside out by what you eat and supplementing in the right way. I talked last week about the importance of what products you use and what you are putting on your skin throughout the day. And this week I am going to be talking about different tools you can use to really help take your skin to another level!

TOOL NUMBER 1: GUA SHA

Skincare Tools, Gua Sha

Let’s start and chat about Gua Sha!

Gua-what?😕 A Gua Sha is a flat tool, made of semi-precious stone, that is used to massage the face. The benefits are unbelievable.

  • Reduces puffiness

  • Fights acne scarring

  • Dark circles and dull complexion

  • Softens fine lines and wrinkles

  • Contours and sculpts jawline and cheekbones

  • Supports lymphatic drainage

How do I choose what Gua Sha is right for me? Choosing your Gua Sha comes down to materials and shape.

Gua Sha tools

Materials:

Rose Quartz - Fine lines and wrinkles, expels negative emotions

Jade - Reduces puffiness and aids lymphatic drainage, brings existing imbalances to rest

Obsidian - Repairs and strengthens muscles over time, clears emotional negativity

Amethyst - Cooling to the skin and tightens pores, reduces stress

Shape:

Concave - used for wider areas of the body - neck, shoulder, spine

Double Curved - under eyes, cheeks, and cheekbones

Cleft - jawline

Teeth Edge - scalp, forehead, cheeks, and chin

Pointed Convex Edge - brow bone

PRO TIP → Use the Gua Sha with the Yarrow | Pom Body Renewal Serum for additional skin tightening benefits.

3 Mistakes Gua Sha Tool users make:

  1. Using it on dry skin: Always apply a serum or a moisturizer before using the Gua Sha tool to massage your face

  2. Massaging the Wrong Way: Always pull the tool upwards and outwards on both sides of the face. Never massage downwards on the skin.

  3. Applying Too Much Pressure: Be gentle with each stroke and apply a firm but soft pressure. Pay attention to how your skin reacts to the pressure and adjust as needed. A little bit of reduces is completely normal.

Bonus Tip: Drink 2-3 glasses of water after your Gua Sha regimen as it promotes healthy lymphatic drainage.

TOOL NUMBER 2: DRY BRUSHING

Dry brushing

The next tool I’m going to share with you is Dry Brushing. Have you heard of Dry Brushing?

✅ Dry brushing is beneficial for your skin AND your lymphatic system.

This technique stimulates the lymphatic system, therefore, aiding in the ridding of toxins. The coarse bristles on the brush stimulate the pores and open them up promoting sweat and the removal of toxins, as well as aiding in the removal of dead skin cells. To dry brush, use a natural fiber brush with a long handle. For added benefits, you can grab your Yarrow | Pom, Cypress, or Grapefruit essential oil and drop a few drops on the brush before you begin.

Get Started:

  1. Start at your feet and move up your body.

  2. Brush your skin using wide, circular, clockwise motions.

  3. Use light pressure in areas where your skin is thin and harder pressure on thicker skin, like the soles of your feet.

  4. Brush your arms after you have brushed your feet, legs, and mid-section. You should brush upward towards your armpits.

  5. After dry brushing, take a cool shower to help remove the dry skin.

  6. After your shower, dry off and then consider adding dōTERRA Spa lotion or Body Butter.

TOOL NUMBER 3: ICE ROLLERS

Facial ice rolling

Cue the cucumbers, let’s add some spa vibes to your morning (and nighttime) routine!

Have you wanted to reduce puffiness and temporary inflammation in your face and neck? What about minimizing redness and tightening pores? How about soothing skin irritations (like breakouts & itchy skin)? If so, check out my next tool to use!

  • Encourage and stimulate blood circulation to the face

  • Reduce swelling, inflammation, and puffiness

  • Minimize redness and pores

  • Promote tightening of the skin

  • Soothe irritation, such as breakouts, itching, redness, and pain

  • Promote lymphatic fluid drainage

These handy tools also help drive your products further into your skin and apply them more evenly (just make sure you wash your roller and dry it before tossing it back in the freezer).

Don’t have an ice roller just yet? Grab a wax cucumber, peel off 2 inches on one end, wrap in wax paper or foil, and place in your freezer. Massage your face. Peel as needed to freshen up your cucumber and refreeze.

TOOL NUMBER 4: VITAMIN C

Vitamin C

Did you know that Vitamin C Oil can brighten your skin tone, fight fine lines, and reduce redness (+ a ton of other health benefits)? Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights everyday free radicals and is good for your immune system to boot. Because of its antioxidant properties, Vitamin C supports your skin's natural turnover and regeneration process (and helps your body repair damaged skin cells). Vitamin C pairs beautifully with Yarrow Pom for a hydrated glow daily! Do you use Vitamin C Oil or Serums as part of your skin routine?

TOOL NUMBER 5: RED LIGHT THERAPY (RLT)

You may have heard about light therapy treatments recently and the benefits it can have for your skin. Hospitals, clinics, and even some spas are starting to offer it. 👉 What exactly is it?

  • RLT is a treatment that uses low wavelength red light to reportedly improve your skin’s appearance. Think acne and wrinkles. But on a medical level, there are reports that it is being trialed for some deeper skin issues!

  • RLT works by stimulating collagen production, increasing blood circulation, and reducing inflammation in the cells. It does this by targeting the mitochondria in your cells by giving them more energy to make more cells. 🤯

  • RLT is being used to improve wound healing, reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scarring, minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and so much more.

TOOL NUMBER 6: ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils

Lastly, I want to talk about my absolute favorite tools! This has made the BIGGEST difference in my skin health. Incorporating essential oils as part of your daily skincare routine will make a HUGE difference for you too! This is one of the main reasons that made me a believer in oils! I shared a little bit about this in my last blog post! Tea Tree oil changed the game for me in breakouts! I no longer have breakouts or even a single pimple anymore! It’s been amazing! Using your oils topically on your skin is an amazing way to support your body, but your skin greatly benefits too simply because of the benefits they provide in different ways.

Here are a few of my Skin Favorites:

✅ Frankincense (hello, anti-aging)

✅ Immortelle (Does your skin need a lift?)

✅ Rose (Roll Rose Touch on your face each night)

✅ Tea Tree (all things skin, hair, and nails)

✅ Turmeric (Yup, legit)

✅ Lavender (Soothing, calming, anti-inflammatory)

✅ Yarrow Pom (Have you ever wanted a fountain of youth? This is it!)

Let’s talk a little bit more about Yarrow/Pom as you have heard about this throughout the blog. It helps promotes the appearance of firmer, smoother, younger-looking skin. There is an oil, a serum and a capsule option that I love. The benefit of all three… Yes Please.

The Yarrow/Pom serum is made up of:

  • Yarrow Essential Oil - reduces the appearance of aging skin and promotes the look of young and healthy skin and a skin healing accelerator.

  • Pomegranate Seed Oil - rich in punicic acid and supports the skin’s natural barrier. It also has superior moisturizing ability.

  • Coffee Seed Extract - skin conditioning agent that helps increase the appearance of smooth skin, improves skin texture and rejuvenates the skin

  • Jojoba, Sunflower, Avocado, Grape Seed, and Argan Kernel oils increase hydration and help prevent normal signs of aging

Start using this post-shower all over your body and let me know the results!

The Yarrow/Pom Capsules are made of:

  • Yarrow Essential Oil - reduces the appearance of aging skin and promotes the look of young and healthy skin and a skin healing accelerator.

  • Pomegranate Seed Oil - rich in punicic acid and supports the skin’s natural barrier. It also has superior moisturizing ability.

  • Celery Seed Oil - detoxifying and blood purifying.

  • Frankincense Oil - lifts and slows the signs of aging and repairs cellular damage.

  • Melissa Oil - tightens and hydrates the skin. It also repairs elasticity and helps to overcome sensitive skin. Bonus – highest Anti-viral plant known!

  • Grapeseed Extract - cellular repair and it helps to reverse and reduce aging.

  • Zinc Citrate - vital for collagen formation and helping tissue development.

  • Vitamin C - prevents UV damage and helps to even skin tone.

Checkout some additional recipes below you can use your essential oils for:

DEWY SUMMER SKIN:

dewy głów

Dewy Summer Skin without the look and feel of cakey, flakey makeup?

You need some Get the Glow Serum in your life.

In a 2 oz dark glass bottle add:

➕ ½ oz Rose Hip Oil

➕ ½ oz Jojoba Oil

➕ ½ Sweet Almond Oil

➕ 20 drops Blue Tansy

➕ 15 drops Copaiba

➕ 15 drops Frankincense

➕ 5 drops Rose (optional)

Shake together before use. Apply to the face after cleansing and allow it to soak into the skin.

OILS FOR HAIR HEALTH:

I love using essential oils to support my hair and scalp. These are a few that I love:

✅ Tea Tree

✅ Rosemary

✅ Peppermint

✅ Lavender

✅ Cedarwood

✅ Geranium

Use these to support growth & a healthy scalp.

In a 2 oz glass bottle, add in 3-5 drops each:

✅ Peppermint

✅ Rosemary

✅ Lavender

✅ Tea Tree

✅ Frankincense

Top with Moroccan Oil and shake before use. Part your hair every 1/2 inch and drip down your scalp. Massage in and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Then wash per normal. Do this every few weeks to support a healthy scalp and hair growth. Take some extra time for yourself and your hair will thank you for it! Add 2-3 drops of Grapefruit essential oil to ½ TBL of jojoba oil and massage onto your scalp in a circular motion. Allow to sit for 30 minutes and then wash your hair as normal. The Grapefruit oil helps break up buildup, while the jojoba oil nourishes the scalp and roots to support healthy growth.

TAME THE BEARD:

This one is for the guys! Craving that luxurious beard or handlebar mustache? Nothing screams TopGun more than a beautiful ‘stache, but you still need to support the skin underneath. 😉

In a 2 oz glass dropper bottle:

➕ ½ oz Jojoba Oil

➕ ¾ oz Avocado Oil

➕ 10 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood

➕ 5 drops Cedarwood

➕ 5 drops Wild Orange

Shake before use. Massage onto your face & facial hair and comb through.

HEALTHIER NAILS

Do you want healthier nails? The Life Long Vitality Supplements have been my go to for healthier hair, skin and nails. The only complaint my husband has with these supplements is they make his hair and nails grow fast! Um Yes please!  My body  and my nails have never been better. There are a few essential oils you can use to support nail growth and health.

My Nail Favorites Include:

✅ Myrrh

✅ Frankincense

✅ Sandalwood

✅ Lavender

✅ Tea Tree

Mix a carrier oil like castor oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, FCO, or sweet almond oil and a few drops of your nail favorites oil of choice and rub thoroughly on your hands and massage into your nail beds 3 days a week. This will help with brittle nails and growth. (I do this on my feet as well)

NON-TOXIC NAIL POLISH REMOVER

The hunt for a non-toxic nail polish remover has been on my list and I haven’t found one better than good old Lemongrass essential oil.

All you need is 2-3 drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil, a cotton ball, and some patience (about 2-3 minutes per finger), the perfect activity for some Netflix binging. Apply 2-3 drops of Lemongrass to your finger and allow it to sit. After 2-3 minutes, wipe off with a cotton ball and move on to the next nail. After you remove your polish and are ready to nurture those nails, whip up this Essential Cuticle Oil.

In a small glass bottle (an empty nail polish bottle that’s been cleaned upcycles nicely)

Add:

💧 5 drops Lavender Oil

💧 5 drops Geranium Oil

💧 5-10 drops Vitamin E Oil

💧Top with Sweet Almond Oil

Shake before use. “Paint” onto cuticles.

Make sure to check our this Hydrating Cuticle Cream from dōTERRA.

DIY TONER

Keep those pores clean and your skin fresh with this great DIY Toner:

In a 4-ounce spray bottle mix:

💧 5 drops Tea Tree

💧 5 drops Geranium

💧 5 drops Frankincense

💧 1 oz Witch Hazel

💧 3 oz Distilled Water

Shake and spray on Face before applying serums and lotion.

MAKEUP REMOVER

So many makeup removers (including wipes) I have tried have either burned my eyes or dried out my skin. The absolute simplest makeup remover is already in your home.

👉 Fractionated Coconut Oil

Take a squirt of FCO into your hand, rub your hands together, and start massaging onto your face and around your eyes. It’s practically effortless how easy this takes makeup off. Wash and moisturize as usual.

CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES

Honestly, when was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? Aside from makeup, they can be full of dead skin cells and bacteria. It’s probably time to clean them. I love wandering over to doTERRA’s Blog because there are so many incredible DIYs and recipes. I had to swipe this Makeup Brush Cleaner to share with you.

Healthy Living Simple DIY's for your Skin

This easy double cleansing routine will radically change your skin. 🤩 This process is so simple and it removes all the dirt and oil from your face so it doesn’t clog your pores.

  1. Step 1: Use your carrier oil of choice (FCO, Jojoba, Rosehip), and massage onto your face with 2 drops of Lavender, Copaiba, or Geranium for 1-2 minutes. Wipe off with a hot damp washcloth.

  2. Step 2: Cleanse with your favorite cleanser (I swear by the Verage Cleanser and the Essential Skincare Line Facial Cleanser.)

  3. Step 3: Roll on Immortelle Blend and a few drops of Yarrow | Pom and press into your skin to hydrate and moisturize naturally.

I do this full routine 2-3 nights a week. The other nights, I just do steps 2 & 3.

BEDTIME MADE SIMPLE

  1. Keeping your body moisturized allows the skin to stay supple and keeps it from drying out. While looking for an all-over moisturizer, you want to look out for fragrances.

  2. The two favorites I use for everyday moisture are Hydrating Body Mist with Beautiful Blend (smells like heaven and makes my skin glow) and doTERRA Spa Hand and Body Lotion.

  3. I use the Beautiful Hydrating Mist each morning. It’s so hydrating and gives me a subtle glow. Then at nighttime, I layer the Yarrow | Pom Serum under my doTERRA Body Lotion. This lotion is unscented, so I add a few drops of Serenity or Balance, and I’m all ready for bed.
