What You Eat Tells A Bigger Story About Your Skin

What You Eat Tells A Bigger Story About Your Skin

July 13, 202211 min read

“Not only are bloggers suckers for the remarkable, so are the Let’s Let's talk about the Integumentary System…the what?!?

✅ This is your skin, hair, and nails.

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ on your body (and often the most overlooked)?

Your integumentary system regulates your body temperature, clears your body of toxins, alerts you when your hormones are out of balance, it’s the first line of defense against outside threats, and tells you if something deeper in your body is going on. This short list doesn’t even scratch the surface of how much this system does for our bodies.

With everything the Integumentary System does for us, the best thing we can do is love it back and start treating it better. To start treating our integumentary system better, we need to know what items we should start swapping in our homes! Some are simple and easy swaps, whereas others can take a little time.

Over the next few blogs, I’ll be covering the different topics Skin, Hair and Nails!

But, before we dive into each individual aspect to our integumentary system, we need to take a look inside.

The BEST way to support your Integumentary System is with proper hydration and supplementation.

You’ve probably heard “you are what you eat”...and it's actually true. When it comes to cell turnover, what you eat and drink matters. So in this blog, we are going to be focusing on ways to support our integumentary system on the inside!

Healing, protecting and revitalizing your skin really begins from the inside out. Our skin is reflecting 80% of what is going on inside our body and 20% of what is going on outside of our bodies. Did you know that eczema and acne are more likely caused by what you eat than anything else?? If you notice issues on your skin, it is 80% the cause of something internal and it really all comes down to what you are putting or not putting into your body. Let me give you 3 steps to taking care of your body from the inside out.

💚Step 1: Proper Hydration

This means drinking good ol’ water, roughly ½ oz per pound of body weight (e.g. 60 oz of water for a 120-pound person). If you drink a lot of caffeinated drinks, are in the heat, or exercising, add more water to your routine. Proper hydration allows you to sweat properly, clears toxins from your body, and supports your organs and brain. If you are thirsty, chances are you are already dehydrated. Do you struggle with getting enough water throughout the day? Check out my favorite citrus oils that not only help you get enough water every day, but also provide additional health benefits.

💚Step 2: Good Nutrition

Make sure you are adding good proteins, fats, and whole fruits/vegetables to each meal. These not only add additional water to your diet, but also essential vitamins and minerals. But, I do want to let you know, that paying attention to the ingredients in the foods you are consuming is important. There is A LOT of junk that is allowed to be in our food. Ingredients that are actually banned or restricted in other countries, but allowed in the food in USA. Isn’t that crazy? And sad? Check out some of the top ingredients to avoid in your food here.

Secondly, even if you attempt to eat the healthiest food out there, you most likely will still experience some nutrient deficiencies. The biggest contributors to this is nutrient deficient food (food that is processed, filled with junk ingredients, etc.), nutrient depleted soil from chronic use of fertilizer, pest repellents, germicides and contaminated water use in irrigation. Did you know that it takes 3-5 years for a nonorganic farm to turn into an organic farm because it takes that long to get rid of ALL the pesticides and toxins used in a non-organic farm? Yikes! So what can we do to make sure we are getting all the nutrients we need on a daily basis? That brings me to the next step…

💚Step 3: Supplementation

Life Long Vitality, High quality supplements, Healthy supplements, supplementation

I will always shout LLV (Life Long Vitality) from the rooftops and for good reason, it is hands down the best all-around supplement on the market. LLV is made up of three different supplements:

MicroPlex VMz - This is a Food Nutrient Complex is a food nutrient formula of bioavailable vitamins and minerals that are often deficient in our modern diets.

xEO Mega - This is a blend of Omega Fatty Acids and Essential Oils to help support joint, cardiovascular, and brain health, and support healthy immune function.

Alpha CRS+ - This proprietary formula combines potent levels of natural botanical extracts that support healthy cell function with important metabolic factors of cellular energy.

A few things that is great to take for overall health and great skin is the LLV. This represents the perfect synergy of nature and science using a full spectrum ingredients and the latest formulated methods to insure peak bioavailability of essential nutrients and metabolic factors. So these are foundational for great skin. The LLV is going to help feed the skin and fill in the gaps where your diet is not providing. The LLV is going to give you 12 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. So I know we can’t replace in a pill what we get in food, the milligrams and micrograms are equivalent to 12 servings of fruits and vegetables. So the picture here shows the foundational skin nutrients found in the LLV. As you can see there are a lot of vitamins great for the skin found in the LLV. So with this product you should notice less pain, more energy, better mood, better sleep and better skin. And many people have also said their hair and nails grow faster and healthier as well.

Side note…. The only complaint my husband has about these supplements is the fact that his hair and nails grow so fast and he has to get his hair cut more often! In my opinion, that is a great problem to have! Lol

And some additional products that are great for internal support for the skin:

Yarrow/Pom capsules. These are amazing! So I am actually going to read off the ingredients so you know what is exactly in this. This is going to provide a powerful antioxidant support for a healthy illuminous skin with an irresistible glow from the inside out. It has yarrow oil which is a skin healing accelerator. It has pomegranate oil which has superior moisturizing ability. It has celery seed which is detoxifying and blood purifying. Frankincense which lifts and slows the signs of aging and repairs cellular damage. Palmarosa oil helps with cell renewal and it also nourishes and restores the skin. There is Turmeric oil which reduces hyperpigmentation. There is Melissa oil which tightens and hydrates the skin. It also repairs elasticity and helps to overcome sensitive skin. There is grapeseed extract which helps with cellular repair and to reverse and reduce aging. Zinc Citrate which is vital for collagen formation and helping tissue development. There is Vitamin C which prevents UV damage and helps to even skin tone. And then there is Melon extract which is extremely hydrating and promotes skin radiance. WOW! How amazing is that. All in that little capsule!

TerraZyme Digestive Enzymes. Enzymes play a critical role in growth, healing and reproduction. They are necessary for breathing, eating, immune function, hormone regulation, detoxification and thousands of over biochemical functions throughout our body. So it is recommended to take with every meal to help digest your food and absorb the nutrients from the foods that you are eating. Reverts those nutrients to energy for your cell. So it’s like Pac-Man where it is going to eat up the yeast and undigested food just helping to make it more bioavailable. This is going to help support healthy production of metabolic enzymes. It’s a gentle way to support your skin and great for any skin conditions.

PB Assist. This is a pre-biotic fiber and 6 strains of probiotic micro-organisms in a unique double layer capsules. So this capsule is a time release delivery system so it’s going to get through your stomach acid and actually get to your intestines where it is needed. It is designed to help protect the probiotic sensitive cultures from your stomach acid so it actually gets to where it needs to go. This is going to encourage friendly bacteria growth. We do need bacteria, but we want friendly bacteria. We want a good balance in our intestines and this is going to promote that balance and proliferation of beneficial bacteria that our bodies need. PB Assist is one that I also take as well every day. (Side note: Antibiotics… the problem with them is that they do kill off the bad bacteria/infection, however they also are destroying all the good bacteria in our system as well when taken and sometimes it can take several months to restore that good bacteria and balance within your system. This is why it can affect your immune system, hormones and gut negatively when taken and can also come out in your skin and cause skin problems). PB Assist supports optimal metabolism and absorption of food as well.

Follow these 3 simple steps each day this month and let me know how you feel! Not only will your skin be glowing, but your whole body will feel incredible! Click here to grab my favorite supplements to improve your skin from the inside out.

Lastly, I want to share with you some additional info you can do in your home to help support what you are putting into your body. Check out these tips:

1.   Never heat your food in plastic

When plastic is heated, it can leach chemicals into your food which then end up in your bloodstream. Instead choose glass, stainless steel or silicone bakeware instead.

2. Go organic!

The phthalates found in foods are the result of farmers spraying with pesticides (including Roundup – your typical weed killer… who wants to put that in your body?). You can easily avoid these by choosing organic produce, organic meats and organic dairy instead.

How to protect yourself and your family from Roundup in your food:

Choose certified organic food. Roundup is prohibited on organic crops. Although contamination is a real threat, the levels found on organic foods are minimal compared to what’s been found on conventional foods. It’s been shown that people who eat organic foods have less glyphosate and fewer synthetic pesticides in their system. If you have any doubts that organic food has less Roundup in it – keep reading.

Eat locally grown whole foods. This goes along with the first tip, after you choose organic, it’s even better if those organic foods are locally grown, “whole”, and unprocessed. Many ingredients that go into processed convenience foods travel long distances (sometimes internationally) and may come into contact with conventional ingredients along the supply chain, which can then contaminate those organic ingredients. Simply put, the greater amount of distance and processing those ingredients go through, the greater the risk of contamination.

Shop at your local farmer’s market. This allows you to shake a farmer’s hand and ask them what types of chemicals they use. If they are not organic, ask them specifically if they use Roundup on any of their fields, at any time of year.

Grow your own food. It’s not feasible for most of us to grow everything we eat, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start a garden. Choose a few items that you buy every week to start with. Love kale, spinach, and leafy greens? They’re easy to grow. Spend a lot on fresh basil? Herbs are some of the easiest things to start with and take very little room. Just start small and work your way up each year to more produce.

3. Get a water filter

Unfortunately, phthalates are often used to line water pipes but you can avoid these by investing in a granular activated carbon filter to remove it. I love the Berkeley filter system.

4. Don’t use old plastic toys or food storage containers

Those cute toys from your childhood and vintage Tupperware containers were manufactured in a time before there were laws about phthalates or BPA, so they’re generally best avoided. But don’t worry – this only applies to soft plastics so your old Lego is safe.

5. Avoid plastics wherever possible

Phthalates and other harmful chemicals could be lurking in most plastic items in your home, so it’s best to avoid plastics wherever possible. Stainless steel, glass, silicone, cloth, paper and cardboard are great eco-friendly alternatives.
